Hentai has been around for a good while, longer than 3DX – or computer-generated images in general. The reason is very simple: back in the day we didn’t have the technology to render 3D images at all. However, now both artforms coexist, and have gained well-deserved traction in the online world.

But they’re not quite the same.

Beyond aesthetics

The differences between 3DX and hentai go way beyond the surface. It’s not just a matter of “2D vs. 3D”. A deeper look will reveal strong divergences between both.

Hentai is a Japanese word that means “sexually perverted”, and is at its core Japanese erotic illustration.  As we’ve mentioned before, hentai has been around for a while now; even though we’re used to link the name to anime and manga, technically al Japanese erotic paintings and stories count as “hentai”, dating back to medieval Japan or even earlier. For this reason, modern hentai continues a long tradition of Far Eastern art styles, imagery and erotic taste.

When Western audiences were introduced to hentai, they were captivated by the exoticism and novelty of a very different erotic culture. And while this is a plus for some people, for others, it might not resonate as much as other erotic art forms.

The possibilities of 3DX

Perhaps the most noteworthy contribution 3DX has made to the lewd art sphere is the possibility to create realistic-looking characters and settings while not being limited by the rules of reality itself. Unlike the heavily stylised, sometimes cartooney nature of anime-style hentai, 3DX often leans heavily towards naturalistic character renders. Those who like their lewd arte more “human-looking”, so to speak, will marvel at the creations of 3DX artists.

At the end of the day, neither of the two is better or worse than the other. Both hentai and 3DX offer an endless world of possibilities, each one of them in their own style and with their own tropes, so everyone has something they can enjoy to consume, or even, to create.

I like both. It started with drawings and now we are at Compuer Animated Films. In the past, many artists worked on a drawn hentai and today the 3dx films are made by one or a small group.
Ok, these are not full-length films yet, but they are coming. 😉
